The City of Astoria is seeking a Lead Childcare Professional for the Pre-K classroom at the Lil' Sprouts Academy. The Lead Childcare Professional is responsible for ensuring infants are safe and well cared for, including regular diapering, feeding, and naps take place, in addition to assisting the Recreation Coordinator in providing age-appropriate curriculum and activities. This position also acts as a leader of Childcare Professionals and supports the childcare program's operations as assigned by the Recreation Coordinator by coordinating with co-teachers, providing input on scheduling and supply needs, and by performing the following duties. This part-time position is budgeted for up to 129 hours per month.

This position will be open until filled.


  • Supervises and ensures the safety of the children in all classes. Classes consist of up to 20 students with a 1:4 to a 1:10 Childcare Professional to student ratio depending on class age and skill level. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager and direct leadership of the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Assists with the overall management of the classroom in which you are assigned as directed by the Recreation Coordinator, including but not limited to: implementing the assigned curriculum, ensuring daily classroom maintenance/cleaning takes place and forms are filled out, and taking the lead role in communicating regular, daily occurrences with parents and families.
  • Represents and communicates on behalf of the assigned classroom by providing lists of programmatic needs for the room, describing challenges encountered, and relays questions and concerns to the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Assists with the Recreation Coordinator's in-classroom training for new staff based on staff handbook guidelines; leads by example, coaches and assists with corrections of unsafe behaviors and techniques. Provides regular follow up reports on training and classroom activities to the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Plans and implements early childhood curriculum as assigned by the Recreation Coordinator; provides high quality educational opportunities and assists with research of additional resources to be applied in-class.
  • Actively carries out and assists with daily scheduled routines and tasks children in class; including eating, feeding, diaper changes, toilet training, resting/napping, classroom schedules and learning/interaction activities.
  • Uses and oversees classroom rosters to track attendance throughout the day, ensuring that all children are safe and accounted for at all times.
  • Builds positive, enriching relationships with children and their families by providing an encouraging and supportive environment at all times; communicates regularly with parents and guardians regarding student's routine progress and behavior.
  • Intervenes and provides support to assist with children's age-appropriate behavioral challenges, as needed. Reports to, and takes direction from, the Recreation Coordinator regarding unusual or extreme behavior issues that may arise.
  • Provides necessary and appropriate framework to help manage challenging behavior and immediately notifies the Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Manager when behavior becomes unmanageable or unsafe; assists the Recreation Coordinator in the implementation of individualized Behavior Intervention Plans for children with co-teacher support.
  • Monitors parent and guardian pick up and checkout procedures, and ensures all paperwork and documentation has been properly completed.
  • Assists in setting a calendar for monthly staff meetings
  • Provides feedback and information to assist the Recreation Coordinator drafting evaluations of childcare professionals, under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager.
  • Ensures safe use of classroom and play equipment, toys, furniture, etc.
  • Provides parents and guardians with accident or incident reports for signature or review if needed. Maintains records and documentation as assigned by the Recreation Coordinator
  • Assists the Recreation Coordinator in procuring weekly list of classroom and supply needs to ensure plans are being implemented and goals are being met.
  • Assists in the implementation of monthly safety drills.
  • Assists in opening and closing the facility, following the opening and closing checklist, as needed.
  • Follows laws of mandatory reporting.
  • Communicates effectively to parents and patrons, provides information and assistance regarding general inquiries, programs, and schedules of the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Ensures the safety, cleanliness and organization of classrooms and shared spaces, by assisting with daily cleaning tasks like wiping down furniture, sweeping, mopping, washing and sanitizing dishes and toys, and laundering soiled towels and clothing.
  • Assists with implementation of special events and activities.
  • Assists in responding to emergency situations in the work place by following the emergency action plan, contacting the appropriate agencies, and documenting incidents and necessary; assists in ensuring First Aid and CPR supplies are maintained and ready for use.
  • Keeps certifications current according to assigned role.
  • Displays excellent communication skills required in working with coworkers/public, including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.
  • Demonstrates abilities to work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Maintains punctual, regular and predictable attendance.
  • Maintains a neat and professional appearance and follows dress code protocol where assigned.
  • Respectfully takes direction from the Recreation Coordinator, Recreation Manager, and Parks Director.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines as described in the City of Astoria Personnel Manual, Lil' Sprouts Staff Handbook, staff trainings and communications.

  1. Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. CPR/First Aid certification within 60 days of hire.
  3. Food Handlers License within 60 days of hire.
  4. Trainings on Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect, Infant Safe Sleep, and Introduction to Childcare Health and Safety through the Oregon Early Learning Division must be taken immediately upon hire and prior to working in a classroom.
  5. Completion of Professional Development for Child & Youth Educators training courses upon hire.


  • One year or more years' experience as lead teacher for daycare/preschool program strongly preferred.


There are no supervisory responsibilities assigned to this position. This position assists in a leadership capacity at the direction of the Recreation Coordinator and under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager, but is not tasked with direct supervisory duties


The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and taste or smell. Employees will be engaging and keeping up with active children; running, jumping, crawling, walking, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee splits time between indoor classroom time and outdoor recreation/playground time. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
