GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This position does not work more than 129 hours per month.  Performs manual and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of Public Works buildings and grounds, trails, streets, barricades, water system and sewer system; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class is responsible for varied maintenance on Public Works facilities and may work individually with a minimum of supervision or as a member of a crew. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Public Works Superintendent.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions and indoors under conditions that require attention to surroundings at all times. The employee must be able to occasionally perform heavy physical labor, lift up to 50 pounds, walk on uneven surfaces, climb ladders, be able to inspect and perform work in positions such as standing, bending, squatting, and sitting; able to utilize the senses of sight, hearing, and touch to recognize and to accurately evaluate equipment and process conditions. In the performance of job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk or hear; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; bend; twist; reach with hands and arms.


EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES: This description covers the most significant essential and auxiliary duties performed by this position for illustration purposes, but does not include other occasional work, which may be similar, related to, or a logical assignment for the position. The job description does NOT constitute an employment agreement between the employer and employee, and is subject to change by the employer as the organizational needs and requirements of the job change.
1. Maintains grounds of Public Works facilities (reservoirs, pump stations, Headworks and shops) by: mowing, weeding, edging, pruning, and spraying for weed control.
2. Constructs, maintains and repairs barricades, both stationary and portable.
3. Paints hydrants.
4. Maintains trails by cutting brush, spraying weeds, applying gravel, and repairing steps and handrails.
5. Paints traffic lines and symbols on city streets.
6. Paints, cleans and maintains city buildings.
7. May act as a crewmember in the repair and maintenance of sewer and water lines.
8. Repairs and installs street signs.
9. Cuts brush and trims trees along roads, around hydrants and at storm sewer inlets.
10. Applies cold patch to streets as necessary.
11. May assist in Public Works office with phones, radio and clerical duties.


ABILITY TO: Understand and carry out oral and written instructions, perform heavy manual labor in sometimes adverse weather conditions; comprehend and observe safety procedures for a wide range of occupational hazards; maintain effective working relationships with other employees; maintain polite and courteous manner with citizens; learn some facets of water, sewer and street systems; communicate verbally on phone and radio system. Successfully complete a criminal background check.

SKILL IN: Use of hand and power tools; operation of lawn maintenance equipment.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Experience in operating a stick shift vehicle and driving a vehicle pulling a trailer; any equivalent combination of experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above described duties.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Oregon Driver's license; safe driving record. Post-job offer the candidate must pass a pre-employment drug test and criminal background check.
